Thor, Captain America games coming in 2011

The wait for Sega’s Captain America and Thor games has been seemingly interminable. Originally announced in April of 2007, the two games will arrive alongside their movie counterparts in the summer blockbuster season of 2011, according to Marvel’s latest quarterly financial report.

Thor will debut in May 2011, giving the golden-haired god of thunder his first starring game role. The film will be directed by Kenneth Brannagh (Hamlet, Frankenstein), with Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Nixon) as Odin and Chris Hemsworth (Captain Kirk’s father in this year’s Star Trek) in the title role.

Captain America will follow his fellow Avenger into theaters and onto game shelves in July 2011. A cast for the film–currently titled The First Avenger: Captain America–has not yet been announced. While Thor will be starring in his own game and movie for the first time, the star-spangled supersoldier has been there before, albeit not for decades. The much-reviled 1990 film Captain America was released direct-to-video in the United States, while the following year’s arcade game Captain America and the Avengers fared much better, spawning ports for the NES, Genesis, and GameBoy, among others.

Wolfenstein to hit stores on August 4

wolfenstein 2009 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360

Guess who’s comin back!! Nazis beware!! Wolfenstein is set for an August 4 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Developed by Raven Software (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Singularity), Wolfenstein drops players into the army boots of B.J. Blazkowicz, once again sent behind enemy lines to thwart Hitler’s occult ambitions. For this go-around, players will be able to fight fire with fire, using the power of a sought-after artifact to combat Hitler’s own freakish army of evil.

With the newest installment in the series still months away, eager gamers will be able to pass the time by brushing up on the franchise’s 3D roots. Activision will release a downloadable console edition of the original PC shooter Wolfenstein 3D next week.

Wolfenstein 3D sees players blasting their way through 60 levels of carnage on their way to a face-to-face encounter with Mecha-Hitler. The game will be available June 3 on the Xbox 360 and June 4 on the PS3. Wolfenstein 3D will be available for $5 (400 Microsoft points).

Shippin’ Out May 24-30: Infamous, Damnation, Personal Trainer: Walking

With so much attention being laser-focused on the lead-up to E3, the previous week is a bit light on the releases side. The heaviest hitter by far is Infamous, the PlayStation 3 exclusive from publisher Sony Computer Entertainment America and developer Sucker Punch (Sly Cooper). The open-world action adventure, chronicles the story of Cole, an average-joe-turned-electricity-wielding mutant who must grapple with the responsibility of doing good and the sheer enjoyment of being evil. That choice, of course, will be left to the player to make, as the game’s open-world nature allows gamers to either save the fictional Empire City’s denizens or whimsically wreak wanton carnage.

Fans of the sci-fi Steampunk sci-fi subgenre are the target audience for Damnation, from British publisher Codemasters and new developer Blue Omega. The Annapolis, Maryland-based studio won Epic Games’ Make Something Unreal competition with the prototype of the shooter, which imagines what it would be like if the American Civil War extended well into the 20th Century. Players play as Hamilton Rourke, leader of a group of rebels fighting against a powerful industrialist who commands an army of mercenaries equipped with technology well ahead of its time. The game ships Tuesday for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

For those who want to walk off hours of game time on the couch, Nintendo is releasing Personal Trainer: Walking. Already available in Japan, the $49.99 DS game comes bundled with two pedometers, which count steps and wirelessly sync to the DS, where the data is analyzed. It then presents statistics about “life rhythm” patterns, such as when the most active and sedentary moments of a player’s day are. The pedometers can also be attached to a family pet to monitor its activity levels.

Downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and subject to change.
